I’m always pleased when I hear about other people taking climate action, so I thought I should get off my bottom, and here we are.
Changing habits is difficult. That’s why we need people in orange high-viz, sitting on gantries: to point out the disconnect between what everyone’s doing and what we need to do.
Governments — with a certain amount of lag — reflect the will of the country (more or less). So climate action is about changing the consensus of the people of the U.K. There is an abstract consensus that we need to do something about the climate crisis. We need to move to being actively involved in doing it. It’s not that big a change. The U.K. population is getting more and more supportive of that. The government is slowly catching up.
Before the motorway gantry action there were several people arrested for conspiracy. But we just kept going. I was up there, alone, for about two hours, doing pieces to camera. When the police climb-team came, they let me upload my videos before they lost patience and arrested me.
