In January 2023 I painted Pushpanath Krishnamurthy. He’s a surprising and inspiring activist. He walks surprisingly long distances, and engages with communities en route. See his webpage for more about his walks.
Another surprising thing about Push was when, towards the end of our sitting, he pulled out his phone and conducted an impromptu video interview with me for his social media.
He kindly lets me share it here too.
Sometimes we don’t know what we feel until we hear ourselves speak it aloud.
I learned a lot about myself, and this project, by doing this interview.
- I’d done a number of portraits by this time. I was starting to notice that these activists are normal people making choices that make perfect sense in the context of the climate crisis, but which are unusual in the predominant culture of the West. This idea shows up in the tag-line on the home-page of this site, and I develop it more in my email to Rebecca Stonehill.
- This was the first time I’d spoken aloud the idea that Faces Of Rebellion wasn’t exclusively mine; that artists around the world might join in and could become a global collaborative art-activism project.
Thanks so much Push for getting me to speak these ideas aloud.
